BIO
Born in 1965, Greensboro, NC / Resides and works in Asheville, NC
Samuel Moore is a fine art wood sculptor, originally trained as an educator, having graduated (summa cum laude) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Carving full time since 2021, his creative journey was ignited within an artistic family, where his uncle Puryear Mims of Vanderbilt University first exposed him to the world of art. Moore’s sculptures harness the power of strong contrasts, intricate textures, and graceful movements, not only capturing the essence of humanity but also paying homage to the beauty of the natural world.

ARTIST STATEMENT
From the sprawling mulberry trees that sheltered my childhood home to the stoic tulip poplars of the Blue Ridge Mountains, trees have quietly shaped my life. I climb them. I hike among them. Now — reverently — I carve them.
Although I have worked with other materials, wood is my choice for carving. It is warm, organic, and abundant — a medium that perfectly suits my artistic style: loose, expressive, and rooted in themes of love, resilience, and spiritual truth. I use wood salvaged from nearly every kind of tree in Western North Carolina. Unwanted, uprooted, or fallen trees still have contributions to make. The trees live on and speak to others through my work, and I am honored to share their stories.
In the forest, my heart sings.
To the silent language of trees, I listen.
And through my work, I give the forest a voice.
